: Brent,
: Big fan here. I am looking to really ground myself in the basics. Been playing for a long time, but never really understood the fundamentals. What would you say to help me. I have a very good ear, but am missing the other stuff. Is there ONE good book that should be a bible of sorts to get REALLY grounded?
: Thanks, man.
hi --i don't feel that there is one source far superior to others as far as getting grounded. if it's reading you're after--what i did was to convert my old arban's trumpet books, and learned to read on guitar practicing with a metronome to get versed in reading---of course i suggest a theory class of some sort if that's what you're talking about. experience has no substitute---if it's recording you're after---a tape machine tells the tale. even on a basic cassette recorder often times you can be able to experiment with tones, and placement of microphones. there are some good publications that are informative and fun to read--learning about other players--even if it's not your particular cup of tea--there's usually something to learn from everbody. hope this is what you were after---thanks for the question---brent
