hey joe, no, i don't always use compression--it seems for me, the louder the amp hits the speaker, the less compression is necessary. the dbx is a line level compressor, so i use it in the rack configuration, and the mxr or boss i use mostly when it's the little pedals straight into the amp, although sometimes i hit the little compressors, and then into the rack.--thanks, brent
